10 Years in Business: A Decade of Building, Growing and Believing in the Vision

As I reflect on nearly a decade of entrepreneurship since launching my communications and branding business in June 2016, I realize this journey has been about so much more than logos, campaigns and social media posts. What started as a side hustle—a passion project I worked on after hours and on weekends—has become my full-time livelihood, not by choice, but by necessity.

1. Your side hustle may become your safety net.

I never imagined the business I built in the margins of my career would one day become my primary source of income. Building something of your own, even slowly, creates opportunities and security you may need when life takes an unexpected turn.

2. Relationships are your greatest currency.

From banks and athletic brands to beauty bars, hair businesses and nonprofit organizations, nearly every opportunity came through relationships, referrals and reputation. People do business with those they trust.

3. Every client teaches you something new.

A financial institution taught me professionalism and precision. Athletic brands taught me bold storytelling. Beauty and hair entrepreneurs showed me the importance of personal connection and authenticity. Associations and nonprofits reminded me that purpose-driven work creates lasting impact.

4. Your expertise is transferable.

I once thought my communication skills were limited to certain industries. I learned that strategic thinking, storytelling and brand development are needed everywhere. Great communication transcends industries.

5. Entrepreneurship requires resilience more than talent.

There have been seasons of abundance and seasons of uncertainty. Clients come and go. Contracts end. Plans change. Success isn't reserved for the most talented—it's often earned by those who keep going.

6. You have to advocate for yourself.

No one will champion your business the way you do. I've learned to speak confidently about my work, own my accomplishments and ask for the opportunities I deserve.

7. Small projects can lead to big opportunities.

Some of my most meaningful engagements started with a simple flyer, a social media strategy or a one-time event project. Never underestimate the power of doing excellent work, regardless of the size of the assignment.

8. Reinvention is part of the journey.

My business has evolved alongside me. What I offered in 2016 isn't exactly what I offer today. I've pivoted, refined my services and expanded my expertise because businesses that survive are willing to adapt.

9. Success isn't always linear.

There were times I thought a traditional career path was the measure of success. Today, I know success can look like creating opportunities for yourself when others don't. Sometimes the closed doors are simply directing you toward the door you've already built.

10. Faith and perseverance matter.

This season has stretched me in ways I never anticipated. Applying for hundreds of jobs without hearing "yes" can challenge your confidence. But entrepreneurship has reminded me that every setback carries the possibility of a new beginning. The business I once called a side hustle has become proof that preparation and perseverance can sustain you through uncertain seasons.

My Biggest Lesson

I didn't choose this transition into full-time entrepreneurship—I was pushed into it. But looking back, every client, every late night, every project and every relationship was preparing me for this moment.

Ten years later, I'm grateful. This business has taught me that sometimes the thing you build on the side becomes the very thing that carries you forward. And for that, I am incredibly thankful.
